John Henkel Obituary

Henkel, John Lawrence 5/14/1933 - 12/9/2021 ANN ARBOR John Lawrence ("Larry") Henkel was born on May 14,1933, to Loretta Shindorf Henkel and John A. Henkel, DDS. Larry grew up in Ann Arbor, attended St. Thomas Catholic School, graduated from Ann Arbor High School, and earned his university degrees at the University of Michigan. Larry enjoyed a full and happy life, enriched by his love of travel, his many interests, and his loving family and friends. Soon after beginning his teaching career, he became a school administrator and served as a high school assistant principal, then as principal at Lincoln Laboratory High School in Ypsilanti. He came back to Ann Arbor as a counselor at Pioneer High School in 1968 and truly found his niche in that position, taking great joy in the goals and accomplishments of his students. He had a special interest in the very successful Ann Arbor Schools Home Building Program, where as a member of the board he was able to observe the completion of many student-built homes in and around Ann Arbor, including one on which his grandson, Nick Stearns, was a student builder. Larry was also a long-time member of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club and supported its mission in the community and beyond. Sharing an equally important place in his life was his "second career" in music. Larry was blessed with a beautiful bass voice and found his passion in singing opera, oratorio, and musical theater. He served as bass soloist at Kirk in the Hills, Bloomfield Hills, for 25 years and also at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. He performed the bass solo of the Beethoven Ninth with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, traveled with the Piccolo Opera Company performing operatic roles, and sang with several local groups performing musical theater roles, with Tevye (Fiddler on the Roof) as his favorite. Later he sang with Measure for Measure, a men's chorus, where he enjoyed exquisite choral singing and great camaraderie. Judy Dow Rumelhart, Jim Wilhelmsen, and Larry, the "Just Friends Ensemble," performed together for several years, drawing their repertoire from Broadway hits, jazz, and the Great American Songbook. Larry was also passionate about the Ann Arbor Symphony and served on its board for 25 years as it grew in stature and reputation as a great regional orchestra. Larry is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Stearns; his stepchildren, David Stearns (Laura Taylor) and Carolyn Stearns Jull (John); grandchildren Jason Till (Demika), Joby Jull, Sunshine Jull, and Nicholas Stearns; and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother, Karl Peter Henkel (Phyllis Mann) and his cousin, JoEllen Thomas (Richard). Larry loved and supported his family in every way possible. We will all miss him and hold him in our hearts forever. A memorial gathering will take place at Nie Funeral Home-Liberty Road Chapel on Saturday January 15, 2022 from 2pm until a memorial service begins at 3 pm. If you wish to honor Larry's memory with a donation, please consider the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra or a charity of your choice.

He lived around the corner from me in the forties. I used to help him fold the Ann Arbor News in eighths and, on our bikes, deliver them. He was a nice boy. His father and I had the same birthday, a fact I found amazing. Nice memories of a long time ago. May he rest in peace.

Mr Henkel was advisor for the Lincoln Railsplitter. I served as editor and he was a very thoughtful kind advisor to work with and for.

That photo so exemplifies how I think of Larry; bright, joyful eyes and an exuberant smile whether guiding students, singing, playing Santa for A2SO or so many others things.

Larry was such a special man. He became my mentor when I came to Pioneer as a counselor and I could always depend upon his wise advice about counseling situations and college choices. I also loved hearing him sing--what talent he had. I will miss him! My sympathies to Jackie and his extended family.

I am sorry for your loss. I had Mr. Henkel as a counselor at Pioneer in the late 70's. He was very supportive and gave great advice.

Larry was my high school counselor while at Pioneer. Being the youngest of five, Larry already had my four sisters before me and considered me as part of his family since he´d been around mine for so long! He was a great friend above all else, and his advice is still insurmountable to this day.

When my parents grew to old to take care of themselves, my daughter Anne, and I moved them to Ann Arbor to a house, as it turned out, next door to that of Larry and Jacky. We have always been gratefl for the concern and willingness tombe helpful that they both showed. Good neighbors make good neighbors.

Larry was a beloved and treasured colleague. There was always a twinkle in his eye. He understood teenagers and was always able to give helpful advice and counsel to help every student make the best of his/her education and life. He was incredibly patient with students. My sincere condolences to Jackie and his family.

My husband Randall and I knew Larry as a colleague at pioneer high school and as a friend. From times when we vacationed together, shared birthday celebrations, and engaged in spirited cribbage games, we enjoyed a wonderful friendship with this gentle man. My condolences to Jackie and family.

Having Larry sit behind me at A2SO concerts always gave me an extra measure of musical pleasure. His knowledge of music and his friendly and smiling face will be sorely missed!!! (Hope to see Jacquie sitting in his seat from now on.)

Mr. Henkel was one of the most caring people I have ever known. Without his unwavering support and guidance, I never would have made it through high school and into adulthood. He always believed in me even when I didn´t believe in myself. He was a truly special individual. My heartfelt condolences go to his loved ones, and I thank them for sharing him with the rest of us.

I will never forget the time Larry sang "Ol' Man River" at South Lyon HS with Measure for Measure. I have never seen such an enthusiastic standing ovation by a mass of 14-18 year-old girls for a man over 70 in my life! Lovely man, who will be missed.

Larry's love of people may have only been surpassed by people's love of Larry.
