Virgene Taylor Obituary

Mrs. Virgene M. Taylor was born Virgene Marcia Sluyter on September 7, 1922, in Detroit, to Dr. and Mrs. E. R. Sluyter of Royal Oak, Michigan, and died on Friday, April 19, 2013, at Evangelical Homes of Michigan, in Saline. Her family moved to Fenton in 1932, and she graduated from Fenton High School in 1940. Upon a move to Port Huron in 1949, she met and married Leroy E. Taylor, the music director at Port Huron's First Methodist Church. The Sluyters and Taylors moved back to Fenton in 1953 where Virgene lived until moving to Linden in 1994, then to Ann Arbor in 2005 where she was a loving care-giver and significant influence in her grandson's life. She was a long-time member of Fenton United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, and was active in both Wesley Fellowship and the Peace Circle. She worked as a secretary at Fenton Industrial in the 1940's, then at a bank in Port Huron in the early 1950's, then at St. Jude's Episcopal Church, Fenton, in the 1970's, then at Fenton Board of Education's administrative offices in the 1980's. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sluyter, in infancy, another sister, Dorothy Sluyter, in 1965, her mother, Ailene M. Sluyter, in 1968, and her father, E. R. Sluyter, in 1972. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leroy E. Taylor, of Saline, Michigan, son and daughter-in-law, Edwin R. Taylor and Faith A. Ferry, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, daughter and son-in-law, Martha M. Farmer and Terence I. Farmer, of Ann Arbor, grandson, Clayton S. Farmer, of Ann Arbor, along with three step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned by her musical family on May 3, at 1:00 pm, at BreconVillage, in Saline, Michigan, with the Reverend Melissa Anne Rogers, officiating. A service of committal will be held at Fairview Cemetery, in Linden, Michigan, that same morning, May 3, at 10:00 a.m., with Virgene's cousin, the Reverend Bruce H. Cooke, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peace Circle at Fenton United Methodist Church, 119 South Leroy Street, Fenton, Michigan, 48430 or the Alzheimer's Association.
