Bettie (Snider) Houston

Bettie Snider Houston, 85, of Anniston, Ala., went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 2013. Born March 24, 1928 in Birmingham, she was the daughter of the late Florene and Horace Snider. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles Lewis Houston and her brother, Paul Snider. Bettie is survived by her sister, Martha Snider Rice, and brothers, Bill and Phillip Snider. In addition to her siblings, Bettie is survived by her children, Charlie Houston (Connie), of Anniston, Marie Houston Payne (Ronnie), of Chulafinnee, Julie Houston Elmer (Ken), of Birmingham, and David Houston (Lynn), of Anniston; her grandchildren, Chuck Houston (Tina), Jennifer Houston James, Alex Houston, Clint Payne (Brooklyn), Carrie Payne Adams (Jonathan), LeighAnn Elmer Tufts (Ryan), David Elmer (Laura), Chip Elmer, Leslie Houston Noles (Matt), and Jesse Houston; her great-grandchildren, Trey, Gabi, and Isaac Houston, Brandon James, Reagan and Jack Payne, Nathan Adams, and Houston Noles. "Grandmother Bettie" was a long-time and active member of Chulafinnee Baptist Church, where she served tirelessly in many roles, including Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, building committee member, founder of the Sunshine and Junior choirs, and director of the adult choir for 40 years. She served on the Cleburne County Hospital and Nursing Home Boards, the Mental Health Board, and was the first woman to serve as Supervisor of the Soil Conservation Board. Bettie was a creative and gifted seamstress, enjoyed working in the garden, canning vegetables, cooking, and was named "The Martha Stewart of Chulafinnee." She loved her family and friends and sustained a busy telephone ministry. She used her time and considerable talents in many ways to enrich the lives of her community and her family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the building fund of Chulafinnee Baptist Church.
