Evelyn Jean Flanders

Evelyn Jean Flanders, 79, died at home Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Ms. Jean, as she was affectionately known, was born in 1934 to Evelyn Minerva Allen Shelton and Clarence Herzog Shelton in Newton, Mass. She met and later married, Harry Edwin Flanders when they were in youth group at Maplewood Methodist Church in Malden, Mass. Active church members, they joined First United Methodist Church when a job moved them and their young daughter to Anniston. It was here that three additional children were born. Jean was eternally generous with her time and energy receiving several volunteerism awards. She was a preschool Sunday school teacher for over 50 years and sang in the choir. Her love of children was further evidenced by her 25+ year career as a pediatric nurse. After retiring, she became an active member of the "Pink Ladies" and also volunteered with the Center of Concern. Jean was a talented needle worker and she was rarely seen without her cross stitch or crocheted angels. Her donated creations often yielded top bids at charity auctions. Jean is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Harry; daughter, Evelyn and brother, Robert Shelton. She is survived by her children, Ruth, James and Catherine; grandchildren Chloe and Benjamin; siblings, Chloe Bickford, Carolyn Martin, Judith Contardo and Russell Shelton. Jean will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. A memorial service is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2014, at First United Methodist Church at 1400 Noble St. All are invited to share written or oral memories of Jean's life during the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the FUMC Children's Ministry. Online condolences may be made at www.graybrownservice.com
