James Francis Lyons

Graveside service for James Francis Lyons, 87, will be Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. at Jacksonville City Cemetery with Father James Macey officiating. The family will receive friends at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jacksonville Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. A rosary service will be held at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Mr. Lyons died Monday at his residence. Mr. Lyons is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy "Marge" Smith Lyons, of Piedmont; a daughter, Bridgett Elizabeth Lyons, of Huntsville; two sons, John William Lyons and his wife, Andra, of Piedmont and Matthew Francis Lyons, of Piedmont; three grandchildren, Kaitlin Lyons, of Tuscaloosa, James P. Lyons, of Birmingham and Nathanael Lyons, of Piedmont and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jake Lyons, Nate Lyons, Tommy Smith, Ben Smith, Don Henderson and Bryan Shelton. Honorary pallbearer will be George Moore. Jim was born and raised in Dorchester, Mass. and never lost his affection for the area. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy and served for 24 years - retiring as a senior chief. During his naval service, he served in World War II in the South Pacific and was awarded the Navy Letter of Commendation. Jim also retired from the Federal Aviation Administration where he worked in the Houston Center, Lake Charles, La. Tower and the Anniston Flight Service Station. He and his wife met in Corpus Christi, Texas, where both were stationed and working as air traffic controllers. Jim was an avid swimmer and reader who never shied away from a heated debate, usually about politics. He also enjoyed sarcasm and a good laugh. He was a member of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes Bridgett and John Francis Lyons; a sister, Mary Bearor and a brother, John Lyons. The family extends their appreciation to New Beacon Hospice and Jamie and Kendra for their compassionate care. The family also appreciates George Moore, who was a great and generous friend.
