Joyce Jones Burt went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be today, Dec. 29, 2013, at Gray Brown Mortuary at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Ford officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 - 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Anniston Memorial Gardens. Joyce was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County and attended Alexandria High School where she was a cheerleader. After graduation she married the love of her life, Maurice H. Burt. Joyce's career included employment at Blue Mountain Industries, GE Plant and Anniston Army Depot. Joyce was a longtime member of Blue Mountain Baptist Church where she grew up. Joyce often offered words of wisdom to her children and friends who sought her advice. She often referred to Biblical references for the basis of her counsel. She was very hospitable. Mrs. Burt had found contentment in her life. She was known for her quick wit and fearlessness. The light of her life was her granddaughter, Whitney Burt Welch and her new great-grandson, Eli Bryant Welch. She was a great encourager to Whitney, particularly in her athletic career. She was a proud mother and loved her sons. She encouraged them and was their biggest cheerleader. She was also quick to make sure they were on the right path. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice H. Burt; her parents, Frank and Armenda Jones; a sister, Willie Ruth Martin and a brother, Elton Jones. Joyce is survived by her sons, Stanley Burt (Missy), of Alexandria, and Timothy Burt (Luke), of Savannah, Ga.; granddaughter, Whitney Burt Welch (Zac); great-grandson, Eli Bryant Welch; sister, Lou Underwood (Bill), of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her nephews: David Jones, Jeff Underwood, David Underwood, Jon Burt, Zane Shafer, Luke Boothe and Zac Welch. Honorary pallbearers will be Bennett Hinds and R.C. Bryant. Special thanks to the nurses and doctors of the oncology dept. and the eighth floor of RMC.
