A memorial service for Mr. William Howard McDonald, 91, of Anniston, will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Parker Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Billy Harris and the Reverend Dr. Mack Amis officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the parlor of the church. Mr. McDonald passed away on January 21, 2014, at the Col. Robert L Howard State Veterans Home in Pell City. Mr. McDonald was born in Baltimore, Md. and was named for President William Howard Taft. Growing up in Baltimore, he was a batboy for the Baltimore Orioles and was personally acquainted with George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Joe Kelly. After graduating from Maryland Institute, he worked for the American Can Company before volunteering for service in 1942 with the U.S. Navy and eventually attaining the rank of Radioman Second Class. After his discharge, he attended Duke University and went back to work with American Can. He and his wife then moved to Anniston where he accepted a position in the engineering department at Monsanto Chemical Company. Mr. McDonald then went to work for M&H Valve and was employed with them for 36 years until his retirement. He was a member and a deacon at Parker Memorial Baptist Church for over 60 years. At Parker Memorial, he served in other areas including Sunday school, Training Union, the Brotherhood and the Sounds of Joy choir. Mr. McDonald is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jones McDonald; a granddaughter, Mary Katherine (Katy) Williamson; his parents, James Archibald and Edna Henrietta Burton McDonald and his siblings, Elsie, Gladys, Lloyd, and Jimmy. Mr. McDonald is survived by his three daughters, Judy Everett and her husband, Bob, of Birmingham, Debbie Coates and her husband, Steve, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Susan Williamson and her husband, John, of Wellington; five grandchildren, Josh Everett and his wife, Beth, Mary Everett Maloney and her husband, John, Charles Coates, Thomas Coates and his wife, Christine and Benjamin Howard Williamson; five great-grandchildren, Kate and Sara Everett and Lilly, Jack, and Owen Maloney and numerous nieces and nephews.
