A funeral service for Atwell G. Burgess, 90, will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Jacksonville for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Burgess died on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston. Mr. Burgess is survived by two sons, John Thomas Burgess and his wife, Barbara, of Calhoun, Ga., and Tony Burgess and his wife, Kellye, of Saks; five grandchildren, Michael Burgess, Matthew Burgess, Leigh Mazur, Candace Carver and Torie Singleton; seven great- grandchildren, Wesley Burgess, Corbin Fuller, Remi Burgess, Jack Rush Singleton, Brooklyn Burgess, Zachary Carver and Allie Burgess, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Burgess was a 1944 graduate of Alexandria High School and was drafted into the Army after graduation. He served his country in the U.S. Army, 137th Infantry Regiment for two years during World War II and was employed by Anniston Army Depot for over 35 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Jenkins Burgess; a brother, R. T. Burgess, and three sisters, Hazel Dison, Frances Berry and Dottie Dawson.
