Graveside service for Barbara Jean Shaddix Callahan, 83, will be Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Anniston Memorial Gardens with Dr. Derek Staples officiating. Mrs. Callahan died peacefully, Friday, July 19, 2013, at The Homestead, inpatient hospice, in Clyde, North Carolina. She is survived by one son, Dennis Durant Callahan (Margie), of Piedmont; one daughter, Beverly Callahan Murray (Ralph); four grandchildren, Ethan Murray, Emily Murray Boyle, Daniel Callahan and Aman Callahan and three great-grandchildren, Rose Murray, Mosha Boyle and Miriam Boyle. Barbara was born in Anniston, Alabama, June 22, 1930, the youngest daughter of the seven children of Columbus and Bertha Shaddix and the last living member of her immediate family. She worked in sales at Kitchens, Hudsons and JC Penney. Barbara was a Red Cross Volunteer and was active as a volunteer for the American Breast Cancer Society and Disabled Veterans. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an devoted military wife and a long time member of the NCO Wife's Club. Her greatest achievement was the care and love of her family, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was especially fond of her many nieces and nephews whom they referred to as "Aunt Bob". Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Columbus and Bertha Shaddix; her brothers, Lewis Clifford Shaddix, Jesse Leon Shaddix and King Charles Shaddix; sisters, Bessie Leola Deese, Lucille Holloway and Annie Mae Pettus and husband, George Benjamin Callahan.
