Bernice Huckaby Watkins, 82, passed away Thursday evening, June 5, 2014, at a Rome hospital surrounded by the love of her family. Mrs. Watkins was born in Randolph County on March 11, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Will A. Huckaby and Lannie Hill Huckaby. She was a 1951 graduate of Oxford High School. She married C. Gerald Watkins on November 24, 1951 in Anniston and they moved to Rome in 1954. Her life's passion was caring for her husband, children and grandchildren. She shared her creative talents as a wedding planner for many years. Her most cherished times were shared with family and friends at the family's summer home on Lake Weiss. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins were charter members of Garden Lakes Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Dethrage and her husband, Fred; brother, Bill Huckaby and his wife Betty, all of Anniston and granddaughter, Mary Alice Babcock, of Rome. Mrs. Watkins is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gerald Watkins; son, Donnie Watkins and his wife, Terry Meers Watkins and their children Colden Watkins and Lauren Watkins, of Evans, Ga.; daughter, Susan Watkins Babcock and her husband Bob, of Rome and their children Bradley Pollard, Allen Babcock and Andrew Babcock; daughter, Leigh Ann Watkins Gibson and her husband Kenneth, of Rome and their children John Chaffin, Ben Chaffin, Abby Chaffin, Kathryn Gibson and Brooks Gibson and brothers, Lester Huckaby and his wife Agnes and Chester Huckaby and his wife Barbara, all of Anniston. Mrs. Watkins cherished her large extended family and is survived by nephews and nieces David (Kathy Jo) Dethrage, of Anniston; Randy (Terri) Huckaby, of Anniston; Cyndi (Mark) McMahan, of Wyo.; Denise (Alan) Medders, of Columbus; Donna (Rickie) Shaw, of Birmingham; Daniel (Sharon) Huckaby, Mack (Lisa) Huckaby and Mark Huckaby, all of Anniston. Other extended family includes 18 great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Garden Lakes Baptist Church, 2200 Redmond Circle, Rome with Dr. Richard Kremer officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Garden Lakes Baptist Church building fund. Parnick Jennings Good Shepherd Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
