Funeral service for Ret. Col. Bernise Russell "Russ" Slay, 91, of Tuscaloosa will be Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Cheek officiating and burial to follow at Forestlawn Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 12 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mr. Slay passed on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at DCH in Tuscaloosa. Mr. Slay is survived by his daughter, Ginger (Phillip) Holley; grandchildren, Delicia (Robert) Baxter, and Rusty (Katy) Holley; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Russell, and Garrett Baxter, Tricia, Davis James, and Rachel Holley; sisters, Mary Nell (Norris) Box, Anna Merle (Bill) Anderson, and Hilda (Butch) Rouse; brother, Stanley (Elnora) Slay; special friend, Hilda Hall, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Dale and Danny Box, Paul Slay, Jim Reaves, Danny Easterwood, and Paul Sager. Mr. Slay was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Eloise Slay; parents, Bernise and Mary Evelyn Slay; sisters, Doris Jean Faurot, and Florice Mae Davis; brothers, James C. and Tommy Slay. Russ was a native of Lucedale, Miss.; graduate of George County High School and U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Russ was retired from the U.S. Army, and retired from the AAD after 34 years. Russ was a funeral director for the past 36 years. There will be a memorial celebration Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Northridge Baptist church, 4115 Watermelon Rd. Northport, AL 35473. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Northridge Baptist Church building fund. Condolences may be left at chapelhillfh.com.
