Oxford - Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jean Smith, 80, of Oxford, will be at 2 p.m. today, October 24, 2013, at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Golden Springs with her son, the Reverend Scott Smith, officiating. Burial will follow at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith passed away on October 22, 2013. Mrs. Smith was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she was also a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class. She also served as a voting poll inspector. Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her son, Wayne E. Smith; her parents, Lovic and Dovie Smith Herring; sisters, Lou Emma Black, Beatrice O'Brien, and Sarah Phillips; and brothers, Walter Lee Herring and John L. Herring. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 63 years, William E. Smith, of Oxford; a son, the Reverend Scott Smith and his wife, Sheila, of Delta; a daughter, Charlotte Smith, of Oxford; grandchildren, Leigh Turnbull and her husband, Brian, Jeremy Smith and his wife, Alycia, Shannon Smith and his wife, Brooklyn, Ben Smith, and Samantha Gilchrist and her husband, Chad; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Burleigh and Fran Boyd; a brother, Donald Herring and his wife, Betty; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Smith, Shannon Smith, Ben Smith, Brian Turnbull, Chad Gilchrist, and Brandon Herring. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class at Antioch Baptist Church. The family wishes to thank Mrs. Smith's niece, Martha Adams, Sid Gambrell and Wanda Harrington with New Beacon Hospice, and Dr. Jin and his nurse, Karen for their excellent care.
