A celebration of life service for Mrs. Betty Jo Green Howell, 85, will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Asberry Baptist Church with the Revs. William Cain and Dan Mattox officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 until 11:15 a.m. Mrs. Howell went home to be with her Lord on Friday, December 11, 2015. Mrs. Howell is survived by her sons, Harold Thomas Howell (Mary Virginia "Ginger"), Mark Joseph Howell (Merrie Beth) and Peter Lester Howell; her brothers, John Harry Green (Judith Dolan) and James Truman Green (Paula Powell); her sister, Margaret Jane Green; her grandchildren, Ashley Howell Wasuna, Jonathan Howell, Nicole Howell, Lemuel Howell, Michael Finn, Emma Howell and Josephine Howell; her great-grandchildren Gavin Mazarat, Malachi Wasuna, Hudson Wasuna and Arlo Wasuna. Mrs. Howell was born on June 23, 1930 in Calhoun County, Alabama to the late Howard Leon Green and Corrie Hazel Hardy Green. She grew up in the Roy Webb Community and attended the Roy Webb School through the ninth grade. Mrs. Howell graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1948 where she met her future husband, the late Harold Roy Howell. The couple married on October 1, 1948. Mrs. Howell graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1971 and taught in the Calhoun County School System. Upon the retirement of her husband, they moved to South Africa to work with the Xhosa Tribe in the Natal Province. Eight years later, after the Iron Curtain had fallen in Eastern Europe, Mr. and Mrs. Howell moved to Budapest, Hungry for three years to continue their missionary work. Next, they relocated to Orlando, Florida where they ministered to the homeless and incarcerated populations. Mrs. Howell returned to Jacksonville, Alabama in 1996, following the death of her husband. Mrs. Howell was an active member of Word Alive International Outreach. She enjoyed working with the Golden Girls Group, folding bulletins and helping in the church. Mrs. Howell had a pioneering spirit. Her strong will helped shape her friend's and family's spiritual growth by her tireless Christian example and her sharing the Word.
