Funeral service for Carl David Burns, 79, will be today, April 8, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with Gary McCurdy and Brady Burns officiating. Burial will follow in the Burns Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 12 p.m. until time for service. Mr. Burns passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017, at his home. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elsie Burns; two children, Marilyn Hudson (Ken) and Gathan Burns (Lavonda), all of Piedmont; two grandchildren, Lauren Hatcher (Levi), of Rome, Ga., and Brady Burns (Allyson Ivey), of Piedmont; one great- grandchild, Hudson Lee Hatcher; one sister, Hazel Coppock, of Heflin; one brother, Cecil Burns (Margie), of Jacksonville; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Levi Hatcher, Brady Burns, Rayford Ivey, Jeremy Goss, Bill Berry, and Sam Ray. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Clay Jr., Donald Williams and Gene Hardin. Mr. Burns was a native and lifelong resident of the Piedmont area, and longtime owner and operator of Burns Timber Company. He was a member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed working, raising cows, gardening, racing, showing his quarter horse, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Sarah Burns; brother, Marshall Burns; sisters, Blanche Warren and Maylene Headrick. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Glorias Steed, the Healing Hearts Caregivers, and Felicia and Hannah with Amedysis Hospice of Gadsden.
