Curtis Newman Estes, 84, of Piedmont, Ala. went to be with The Lord on July 6, 2015. Born in Cherokee County, Ala. to Thomas Lafayette Estes and Cordie Jewel Rankin, Curtis worked diligently on his family's farm, growing cotton and soybeans, logging and raising cattle. Curtis attended Spring Garden School and his first job off the farm was driving the school bus at age 17. Curtis received his education in Pharmacology at Auburn University and Jacksonville State while serving in the Navy. Curtis's military enlistment took him around the world from San Diego to Vietnam, Pensacola to Japan, Portsmouth, Virginia to the Mediterranean, all the while receiving awards for his quick problem solving skills and superior dedication to the well being of all in his charge. Honors include the prestigious award of Sailor of the Year presented while serving on the U S S Lexington aircraft carrier. Curtis enjoyed golf, photography, caring for the pets of deployed sailors, and organic home gardening, but his favorite hobby was his secret benevolence to struggling families. Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Curtis N. Estes retired after 23 years of service, and continued his benevolence by distributing vegetables and planting gardens for all who were interested. He never refused a strangers request for vegetables from his garden, and they were given with a smile and kind words. Curtis is survived by his wife, S. Juanette Estes; son, Trent N. Estes, of Missouri; daughter, Angela Hendrickson, of North Carolina; and many grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at Thompson Funeral Home on Monday, July 13, 2015, at 2 p.m. with visitation beginning at noon. Burial with military honors will folllow at Gnatville Cemetery.
