Funeral service with full military honors for CW4 Thomas Hillman Payne, US Army Retired, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Liberty Cemetery in Odenville. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Survivors include his children, Celeste Payne Alm (Vivienne Barrett), Bert Payne (Liz Brown), Thomas Payne (Amy) and Janice Payne Henson; four grandchildren; his sister, Brenda Payne Vaningan (Jim) and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Smathers Payne; parents, Ray Bert and Willie Mae Goddard Payne Hooper; step-father, John C. Hooper; sons, Thomas Michael Payne and Phillip Alan Payne Ballog; brothers, Bert Bernard Payne and Willie Ray Payne. Mr. Payne was retired from the U S Army after 30 years of service having served in Korea and Vietnam and also retired from the Alabama Department of Education. He was a member of Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation (AQAF). He supported and regularly critiqued the Atlanta Braves and was an avid supporter of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
