Ms. Daisy Weller Smith died Monday, October 26, 2015, in Jacksonville. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. David Hodges will be officiating. Ms. Smith was born January 14, 1926 in Birmingham to Thomas Weller Smith and Anne Rowan Smith. She spent her early years in Birmingham and Atlanta. Later, she resided at Ten Oaks in Jacksonville, the home of her maternal grandparents, George and Julia Gunter Rowan. She attended Parsons School of Design in New York City and maintained a lifelong interest in the visual arts. She also enrolled at Miss Simple's School for Girls (NY), the Arts Students League of New York, and Jacksonville State University. Her many interests included travel, deep-sea fishing, and the arts. She supported U.S. military personnel at Fort McClellan and other bases through her work with the United Service Organizations (USO). She was a long-time financial services specialist at the First National Bank of Jacksonville and its successors, AmSouth and Regions banks. The vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church unanimously elected Ms. Smith senior warden in 1975. She was the fifth generation of her family to serve in that capacity. As senior warden, she led the lay governing body of the congregation. Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Weller and Anne Rowan Smith; her brother, T. Weller Smith Jr., of Gainesville, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to St. Luke's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 55, Jacksonville, AL 36265.
