Daniel Robert Glass, 89, passed away on November 17, 2017. He born July, 15, 1928 in Siluria. He served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Navy during and after World War ll with his most notable service occurring on the USS Alabama. Later in his Navy career, he served on the Naval Destroyer USS Noah and ended his career in the Naval Reserves. After returning from the War, Dan lived in Birmingham, where he worked for Hayes Aircraft/Pemco for 38 years retiring in 1990. During his tenure at Hayes/Pemco, he was an active member of the UAW including serving as vice president of the Birmingham Labor Union Council. He was a Mason and member of the Zamora Shrine Temple and the Dixie Shrine Club. As a Shriner, he was an active member of the Zamora Transportation Road Runners, where he made approximately 366 trips, transporting children with medical needs to Shrine Hospitals in Greeneville, S.C. and Cincinnati, Ohio. He also was a member of the American Legion and the USS Alabama Crewman's Association. Dan was a member of Pell City First United Methodist Church and the Seekers Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julia Ann Erwin Glass; his brother, Lawrence Glass; his children, Carolyn Ruth Weathers, John Paul Glass; his stepchildren, Jerald (Sandy) Barrett, Sherry ( Jeff) Akin; daughter-in-Law, Bonnie Glass; grandchildren, Hunter Glass, Allison Glass, Molly Glass, Kristina Denton, Michelle Ramage, Henry Glass, Mary Ann Avery, Will Barrett, Tanner Barrett, Tyler Akin, Scott Akin, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Earl and Mary Ann Glass; his siblings, Herman Glass, Janie Glass, Arthur Glass, Inez Roper, Esther Reeves, Martha Thomas, Bill Glass, Louie Glass, and his son, Robert Leslie Glass. A memorial service will be held today, November 19, 2017, at Pell City First United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m and service at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to or the Seeker's Class Mission Fund of the Pell City First UMC.
