David R. Steele, 61, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday, October 13, 2016. A celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, October 22, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Columbus with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight in the Mill Room of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia. David was born August 26, 1955 in Talladega, to the late Jesse Reynold and Lola Dean Parsons Steele. He attended Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville and furthered his education at Jacksonville State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology in 1984. He began his career with the Sarasota, Fla. YMCA in 1984 and after working for the Atlanta YMCA for several years he moved to Columbus, Ga. in 1992 as the President/CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Columbus. For the last 34 years through the YMCA he devoted his life to serving others and impacting the lives of many in positive ways. He led the building of the John P. Thayer YMCA which is an important part of the Columbus community. He will be remembered as a great man, a great leader and loving husband and father who will be truly missed. David was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Reynold Steele; mother, Lola Dean Parsons Steele and sister, Rebecca Steele Hammonds. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Pamela Thompson Steele; his son, Dustin Steele (April) and daughter, Ashlyn Steele.
