Donald R. Schmitz, 72, died on March 31, 2015 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham after a prolonged illness. The family will receive friends for a memorial visitation on Friday, April 3, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Attalla. Don was born and raised in Montgomery. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Troy University and later obtained his Master's degree (History) and Doctor of Counselor Education from Auburn University. He served in the Air Force Reserve. Don became the Dean of Student Affairs at Jacksonville State University in 1972 and served in that position for over twenty years. In 1976, he was elected president of the Alabama Personnel and Guidance Association and in November of 1978 he was honored with the association's Distinguished Service Award. After retiring as dean, Don taught counseling at Jacksonville State University. He also provided counseling services at Mountain View Hospital in Gadsden from his retirement as dean until shortly before his death. Don was a Christian of the Methodist faith. Don was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Sanders Bright; his father, Richard Schmitz; his brother, Warren Alan Schmitz. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Johnson Edge Schmitz; step-sons, Andrew, Adam and Alex Edge; sisters-in- law, Helen (William) Alexander and Kelly (Stewart) Burns; brothers-in-law, Neal Johnson, Les Johnson and Wes (Jennifer) Johnson. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to, Dr. K. J. Shah, Dr. Robert Bourge, Dr. Joseph Barney, Dr. Luckhardt and her pulmonary team, Dr. Ghatalia, and to the nurses and staff of the pulmonary unit at UAB.
