Piedmont - Funeral services for Donnie Gowens, 60, of Piedmont, who passed away February 14, 2013, will be 3 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel. Bro. Clint Vaughn will officiate. Burial will follow at Midway Baptist Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel & Cemetery is in charge of services. Mr. Gowens was a graduate of Hokes Bluff High School. He was a faithful member and deacon of Midway Baptist Church. He loved fishing and gardening. He was employed at Gulf States Steel for 28 years. He was employed through IBEW Local 136 until he became ill. He fought an eleven year battle with cancer. He was a loving devoted husband, dad and pawpaw. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Martha Gowens; son, Matthew Gowens; granddaughter, Leihton Gowens; mother, Carolyn Gowens; brother, John Gowens; sister, Carol (Jerry) Dowdy; brothers-in-law, Bobby (Charlotte) Matthews and Butch (Teresa) Reaves, sister-in-law, Voncille Gowens; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Gowens; brothers, Joel Gowens and Stevie Gowens; and mother-in-law, Lucy Helms. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Martha Gowens; son, Matthew Gowens; granddaughter, Leihton Gowens; mother, Carolyn Gowens; brother, John Gowens; sister, Carol (Jerry) Dowdy; and brothers-in-law, Bobby (Charlotte) Matthews and Butch (Teresa) Reaves. Pallbearers will be David Gober, Pat Griffith, Alton Maddox, Tony Robinson, Rick Gustine, and Justin Gowens. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Waldrop Sr., Frank Burgett, and Hershel Keeton. Special heartfelt thanks to Dr. Melissa Baird, Wanda Pitts, RN, and the 4th floor Oncology Unit at RMC hospital, Anniston.
