Funeral service for Rev. Douglas J. Kirby, 89, will be today at 11 a.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Hollis Martin, the Rev. Daniel Harper and the Rev. Henry Melton officiating. Interment will follow at Hall's Chapel Cemetery, Weaver, Ala. Mr. Kirby passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, Ala. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Virginia L. Kirby; son, Wayne (Flora) Kirby, of Flowery Branch, Ga.; daughters, Rita (PK) Brooks, of Anniston, Janice (Lanny) Taliaferro, Madison, Ala. and Debra (Dennis) Seaver, of Eden, N.C.; grandchildren, Brandon Kirby, Gregory Wheeler, Steven Taliaferro, Anna Harris and Amelia Killam; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Cecil Kirby, Kyle Kirby, Dwight Kirby and Jerry Kirby; sisters, Clara Melton and Joyce Clark. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Kirby, father, Dan (Margie) Kirby, sisters, Lila Phillips, Mary Gray Bragg, brother, Elbert Kirby and son-in-law, Larry Wheeler. Pallbearers will be Brandon Kirby, Gregory Wheeler, Edward Pass, Rudy Ontiveros, Wayne Brooks and Dwight Kirby. Mr. Kirby was a native of Calhoun County and a long time pastor of Congregational Holiness churches and a barber for many years. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He was a member of Hall's Chapel C. H. Worship Center and a member of the Men's Bible Fellowship Class. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and loved his family and many friends very much. He will be greatly missed by many. The family would like to thank the staff of Jacksonville Health and Rehab Comfort Care Hospice of Gadsden and Amedysis Hospice of Rainbow City for their help and support during the illness of Mr. Kirby.
