A celebration of life memorial service for Dr. Gaston Owen McGinnis, 86, will be held today, May 31, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary at Parker Memorial Baptist Church. The family will receive friends for one hour, immediately following the service. Dr. McGinnis went to be with his Lord and Savior late Friday, May 29, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Hampton; two sons, Lee Owen McGinnis (Cynthia) and Evan McGinnis (Anne); two daughters, Donna Courtney (Jerry) and Jeannie McGinnis; six grandchildren, Jennifer McGinnis Horton (Andrew), Anastasia McGinnis Stafford (Douglas), Geoffrey McGinnis, Gerald Clayton Courtney III, Kyle McGinnis and Gillian McGinnis and four great-grandchildren, Braeden Horton, Blakeley Horton, Cannon Stafford and Fallon Stafford. Dr. McGinnis was born on December 31, 1928 in Goldsboro, N.C. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950 and from the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham, in 1954. Dr. McGinnis served a rotating internship at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield, Ala. and served a Surgery Residency at Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke, Va. He was Chief Surgery Resident at Lloyd Noland from 1957 - 1959. Dr. McGinnis was subject to the Doctor's Draft and served two years as Chief of Surgery at Sandia Base Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. from 1959 - 1961. He returned to Alabama in January, 1962 where he served at Anniston Memorial Hospital (RMC), Stringfellow Hospital, Wedowee Hospital and Bowden Hospital in Georgia. Dr. McGinnis maintained a private office in Anniston from January, 1962 until October, 2012. The family will provide flowers from their garden in Choccolocco and request that no other flowers be sent. In lieu of flowers, per the family's request, donations may be made to The Berman Museum of Natural History, 840 Museum Drive, Anniston, AL 36206, The Anniston Soup Bowl, 1516 Moore Ave, Anniston, Alabama 36201 or to Parker Memorial Baptist Church, 1205 Quintard Avenue, Anniston, AL 36201.
