Edgar Leon Fowler Jr


Edgar Leon Fowler Jr. passed away at the age of 67 on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston. He was surrounded by his family. Ed was married to the love of his life, soul mate and best friend, Trisha Grizzard Fowler. They enjoyed going on vacations, traveling to places as far as Paris, France. Ed was an avid golfer and one of the highlights was playing at Pebble Beach and Spy Glass Hill in California. Early in his career he loved covering The Masters Golf tournament, which he shared with his father. Edgar Leon Fowler Jr. was born on December 28, 1946, in Rome, Ga. to Edgar Leon Fowler Sr. and Katherine Scoggins Fowler. He was the eldest of four children including two brothers, Bill and Steve and a sister, Jenny. Ed graduated from East Rome High School in 1964. He started is career in newspapers at the age of 12 delivering papers. After high school he attended Berry College and The University of Georgia. Besides playing golf Ed loved reading and writing. This passion led him back to the newspaper business. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Ed earned his living by working in various positions for newspapers throughout the southeastern United States. He worked for the Athens (GA) Daily News as a reporter and then moved on to be the Managing Editor for The Anderson (SC) Independent Mail. Ed worked as a Managing Editor and Editor and Publisher for many newspapers including The Marietta (GA) Daily Journal, The Tuscaloosa (AL) News, The Sampson (NC) Independent, Columbus (GA) Enquirer, The Walker County (GA) Messenger, The Montgomery (AL) Advertiser, The Talladega (AL) Daily Home and the Anniston (AL) Star. In 1992 Ed joined Consolidated Publishing. He was the Publisher and Editor of The Daily Home in Talladega and served on the board of directors. In 1996 he was promoted to the Vice President of Operations for The Anniston Star and all of the Consolidated publications. He also oversaw the construction of Consolidated facilities in Anniston and Talladega. He retired March 1, 2014 ending his career as Publisher and Editor with The Daily Home. Ed loved his mother's beautiful smile and he was so proud of his sister, Jenny, who is a nurse. The other passions of his life were his children and grandchildren. Ed was firm in his beliefs and loved his church. Ed had a giving heart and always gave to the Salvation Army and volunteered at The Soup Bowl. Ed is survived by his wife, Trisha Grizzard Fowler of Oxford; his three children, Laurie Fowler (Gus Davis) of Huntsville, Lindy Hamner (Mike) of Tuscaloosa and Edgar Leon "Lee" Fowler III (Tait Peterson) of Chicago, Ill.; two step-sons, Matthew Flint, of Auburn and Michael Flint, of Oxford; four grandchildren, Hallie Grace, Luke, Eli and Ella Kate Hamner, of Tuscaloosa; mother, Katherine Fowler, of Rome, Ga.; his sister, Jenny Ballantine, of Rome, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Pam O'Brien (Mark) and Penny Guzman (Rick) and brother-in- law, Keifer Grizzard; mother of his children, Marcella Rhodes, of Northport; nieces, Amy (Joe) Forston, of Cedartown, Ga., Brooke Mundy, of Atlanta, Ga., Brandi O'Brein (Brandon), of Robertsdale and Sydney Guzman, of Oxford; nephews, Matthew (Erica) and daughter, Delilah Ballantine, of Hubert, NC, Andrew Ballantine (Courtney) and their sons, Nathan, Zack, Evan and Isaac, of Rome, Ga., Jim Fowler (Carrie) and sons, Jamey, Jack and Jarret of Maysville, Ga., Blake Mundy (Katie), of Atlanta, Ga., Ricky Guzman, of Oxford and Chase Boswell, of Oxford; cousins, Julie and Robin Abels and Jake Scoggins, of Rome, Georgia. Ed is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Leon Fowler Sr.; two brothers, William Ray Fowler and Steven Howard Fowler; brother-in-law, Doug Ballantine; aunt and uncle, Charlotte and Tom Scoggins; mother-in-law, Betty Grizzard and sister-in-law Paula Grizzard. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, at The Church of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Anniston.
