Mrs. Edith Jennette Johnson Jones, 83, passed away peacefully July 2, 2017, following a lengthy illness. She is survived by daughter, Donna S. Jones LaMond (Marc), of Houston, Tex.; son, Charles E. Jones Jr. (Dorothy), of Athens, Ga.; five grandchildren, Melissa Barret LaMond, of Houston, Tex.; Sarah Michelle LaMond, of Dallas, Tex.; John Taylor LaMond, of Houston, Tex.; Joshua Browning Jones, of Athens, Ga.; and Caleb Austen Jones, of Athens, Ga.; one first cousin, Lavaughn Johnson, of Opelika; one first cousin, once removed Faye Gorey Robinson, of Anniston, and a beloved Yorkie, Cricket. Mrs. Jones is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Lt. Col. (ret.) Charles E. Jones Sr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond F. Johnson (Addie S. Castleberry); sister, Annette Marie Johnson, and aunt, Sarah Geneva Page. She was the last surviving granddaughter of Elijah Franklin Johnson and Prudence Rebecca Rhodes Johnson, of Pleasant Valley, from whom came many grandchildren. The Johnsons have been mainstays of the Pleasant Valley community for generations. Born March 12, 1934, in the Pleasant Valley community near Jacksonville, she grew up in that community surrounded by many adoring aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as, her parents. Mrs. Jones graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1952, and married June 29, 1956, in Alexandria. She was employed in her early life at the GE Plant in Oxford and was a telephone operator for Southern Bell in both Anniston and Birmingham. In their early years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Jones lived in Birmingham and Anniston. Once her husband joined the Air Force, they lived in Albany, Ga. (Turner Air Force Base); Tachikawa AFB, Japan; Ft. Walton Beach., Fla. (Eglin AFB); Columbus, Ohio (Rickenbacker AFB); Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Myrtle Beach AFB); and Tucson, Ariz. (Davis-Monthan AFB). She and her children lived in Anniston while her husband was serving in Vietnam. After Col. Jones's retirement, they resided in the Anniston area, initially at Golden Springs and later at Saks. For the past two and a half years since the death of her husband, Mrs. Jones has been residing in Houston, Tex., where her daughter lives. Mrs. Jones was a longstanding member of the First Baptist Church of Saks, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching pre-school children at Sunday School. In addition, she was a teacher-helper in the older children's department and was an active member of the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class. Mrs. Jones was an exemplary military officer's wife, as well as, a wonderful and loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, niece, aunt, and cousin. She will be greatly missed. Visitation will be Sunday, July 9, 2017 6-8 p.m. at Gray Brown Service Mortuary in downtown Anniston, with the funeral at 11 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2017 at Gray Brown. A private graveside ceremony will be at the Alabama National Cemetery at Montevallo July 10, 2017 at 2:45 p.m. Pallbearers are Dr. Jeff Fuqua, Mike Howard, Caleb Jones, Joshua Jones, John LaMond, and Doug Shaddix. Honorary pallbearers are Lamar Denkins, Roy Houston, Lester Huckaby, and Lavaughn Johnson.
