Edna Mahaffey Grimes, 88, died February 17, 2014, at Blumenthal Jewish Nursing Center. She was born January 14, 1926 in Anniston to Edgar & Pearl Mahaffey. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Greensboro with the Reverend Larry Pugh officiating. The interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Grimes was a faithful member of Hillcrest Baptist Church since 1958. Her passions were serving as a Sunday School teacher and singing in her church choir. She was employed at the former Bates Nightwear for many years and a retiree of Blue Bell - Wrangler. Mrs. Grimes was a strong advocate of continuing education. One of her proudest accomplishments was to graduate from Northeast High School evening program in the same year her son, Wayne Grimes graduated in 1972. She attended King's College where she obtained a certification for office administrations. Later in life she learned sign language and also earned a certificate from GTCC for basic computer skills. Mrs. Grimes was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband Cecil of 70 years, who died in October 2013; her sisters, Minnie Waddell, Bertha Poland, Lilly Barker, Carrie Bradford, Lavelle Stewart, Betty Conner; her brothers, Lewis Mahaffey, Carl Ed Mahaffey, Bill Mahaffey, Pete Mahaffey, and Dewitt Mahaffey. Mrs. Grimes is survived by her children, Doug Grimes and wife Betsy, Edna Brantley and husband Tim, Wayne Grimes, Ronnie Grimes and wife Linda; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Poly Carter, Susie Smith; her brother, John Mahaffey and wife Jackie. In lieu of flowers, the family request that you make a donation to Mrs. Grimes cherished church, Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3920 Baylor Street, Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
