Elizabeth Ellen Thompson Saus

Obituary
The Guest Book is expired.

Elizabeth Ellen Thompson Saus was welcomed into Heaven on September 15, 2016. Although she was a current resident of Cherokee County Health and Rehabilitation Center and had lived in Hickory, N.C. for 7 years prior to her coming "back home" to Alabama, her heart never left her beloved Piedmont. Appearance belying her age, she was 96 at the time of her passing. Mrs. Saus was the daughter of Robbie Green Thompson and Arthur Pleasant Thompson, of Piedmont. She is survived by her children, Dr. J. Arthur Saus (Bonna) and Frances Saus Hall (Rev. Bill Hall). Before retiring, Mrs. Saus was curator/director of the Edith Nourse Rogers Women's Army Corps Museum. Serving in that role for 11 years prior to taking an early retirement to care for her elderly mother, as curator/director, Saus developed the museum from its infancy into a strong museum at Ft. McClellan, receiving recognition as the first nationally-accredited museum in Alabama. The Fort McClellan WAC museum is the predecessor of the United States Army Women's Museum at Ft. Lee, Virginia. One of Mrs. Saus's most meaningful involvements was her work with the Piedmont Rescue Squad in the 1980s. At the age of 65, Mrs. Saus began volunteering with the organization, serving as bookkeeper and becoming an EMT, making regular "runs" with the ambulance, helping care for the injured and ill in their most critical moments. Funeral service will be held for Mrs. Saus at Carmel Church, Piedmont, with the Rev. Neale Lanigan and Rev. Gary Black at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2016. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Piedmont immediately following the service. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Saus asked that donations be made to the Piedmont Rescue Squad, Carmel Church or First Presbyterian Church, Piedmont. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care (Valdese, N.C.) and Cherokee County Health and Rehabilitation Center (Centre, Ala.) for their love and care.
