Florence Hughes Dempsey, 96, died December 5, 2015, at the home of her daughter in Oxford. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles E. Hughes Sr, and Eunice Wycoff; one brother, Charles E. Hughes Jr; her husband, Herschell W. Dempsey Sr; one son, Herschell W. Dempsey Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Propst; two sons, David and Warren Dempsey; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Originally from Iron City, Alabama, Mrs. Dempsey also lived in White Plains, Oxford, Anniston, Saks and Weaver. She attended schools in Iron City and White Plains and graduated from Calhoun County High School now (Oxford High School) and attended Montevallo College for Women. Mrs. Dempsey left Alabama in 1949 to join her husband in the Panama Canal Zone where they spent the next twenty years. After her husband's retirement, they returned to Alabama, where she worked as a substitute teacher, medical transcriptionist and free-lance writer for various magazines. Mrs. Dempsey had many interests, but her favorites were reading, gardening and volunteering at the library.
