In the mid evening hours of September 3, 2015 Gary Gowens left this world and entered into his eternal reward. A lifelong resident of Calhoun and Etowah Counties, Mr. Gowens, 69, would have been 70 on December 21, 2015. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, Mr. Gowens passed away at his home in Alexandria, with his wife Jane by his side. Mr. Gowens is survived by his wife, Jane Gowens; two daughters, Tammy (David) Payne, of Rome, Ga.; Allison (Scott) Baird, of Alexandria; a son, Greg McDuffie, of Alexandria; three very special granddaughters who loved their Pop dearly, Lindy Baird Mange (Alan), Casey Baird and Haley McDuffie, all of Alexandria; two great-grandchildren, Briley McDuffie and Shaw Mange; two sisters, Sylvia (Bobby) McFall, of Jacksonville and Linda Lipscomb, of Boaz; one brother, Glen (Dene) Gowens, of Hanceville and many special nieces and nephews. Mr. Gowens was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Edith Gowens, of Etowah County and two brothers, Charles Gowens and Robert Gowens. Gary Gowens was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and a retiree from the Anniston Army Depot, where he worked as a toolmaker. Mr. Gowens was a member of Alexandria Lodge #208 F&AM and Anniston York Rite Bodies. Gary was known as the rock of his family. He spent his entire life taking care of and providing for others. Many attributes could be written, but Mr. Gowens life was a testimony in action. He was always known for walking the walk. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel with Rob Goodwin and the Rev. Larry Conner officiating.
