Funeral service for Mr. George Lawrence Areno, 79, will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017 at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jacksonville with the Honorable K.L. Brown officiating. Burial will follow at White's Gap Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Areno passed away peacefully on August 22, 2017, at NE Alabama Regional Medical Center. Mr. Areno was born to Lucy Kaminski and stepfather, Alexander Kaminski, in Bridgeport, Connecticut on February 22, 1938. He served his country with honor in the United States Army including a tour in Vietnam. He retired from the Army in 1980 as a Master Sergeant. He was a devoted member of his state and community, including serving eight years on the Jacksonville City Council. He founded the Calhoun County Head Injury Foundation and has stayed committed to his family and community. Mr. Areno is preceded in death by a daughter, Tamra K. Areno, and two sons, Anthony "Tony" G. Areno and John L. Areno. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 faithful years, Barbara K. Areno; his youngest son, Michael H. Areno; five grandchildren, Amanda M. Salazar, Amy L. Bryant, John Ethan Areno, Michael Cody Areno, and Justin H. Areno, and five great-grandchildren, Zoe I. Bryant, Nathaniel John H. Bryant, Kathryn M. Salazar, Elizabeth E. Salazar, and Cherry S. Bryant. Pallbearers will be Michael Cody Areno, Justin Areno, David Bunn, Jason Salazar, Steve Rogers, and Ray Weldon.
