A private graveside service for SMSGT George Milton Newland Jr., 90, (USAF Ret.), will be held at a later date. SMSGT Newland died on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Jacksonville Health and Rehab. He is survived by his wife, Carol M. Newland, of Jacksonville; one daughter, Torey Newland (Stephen) Benson, of Birmingham; four grandchildren, Tiffany (Jonathan) Johnston, of Anniston, Brian Rosson, of Boaz, Trent Benson, of Birmingham and Taylor Benson, of Atlanta and two great-grandsons, Austin and Nicholas Johnston, of Anniston. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, SMSGT Newland entered the US Air Force and served his country during WWII. He retired after 27 years of devoted service. SMSGT was loyal and dedicated to his family, being a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville and enjoyed attending when he was able. In his spare time, SMSGT Newland loved playing golf and enjoyed playing his last 18 rounds on his 90th birthday. Upon retiring from the military, SMSGT Newland worked for the Anniston Army Depot and then for Jacksonville State University as a Professor in Management and Marketing. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. SMSGT Newland was preceded in death by his parents, George Milton Newland Sr. and Evelyn McCalley Newland and one daughter, Ginger Lea Newland Teer.
