Graveside services with military honors for George Thomas Atkisson, 85, of White Plains, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Forestlawn Gardens in Golden Springs. His family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory. Mr. Atkisson passed away Friday morning at his residence. His survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruth Atkisson; his children, Phyllis Hamner and her husband, Bill, Judi Murray and her husband, Norman; his grandchildren, Lindsey (Chuck) Pearson, Ashley (Scott) Dorsett, Curt Murray, Courtney (Blake) Darden, McKenzie Murray; six great-grandchildren; sister, Ruthie (Tom) Roberson; brother, Paul (Ramona) Atkisson; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Atkisson is preceded in death by his parents, Mr and Mrs. Joseph Green Atkisson; grandson, Jamie Russell; great-granddaughter, Haylie Darden; three brothers and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired form the U.S. Postal Service. He loved Bluegrass music and enjoyed playing his banjo in a band for many years. Mr. Atkisson received Christ prior to his death. The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Lattuada and his staff at Cancer Care Center of Anniston and New Beacon Hospice, especially his nurse Jamy Martin. Pallbearers will be Curt Murray, Chuck Pearson, Scott Dorsett and Blake Darden. Miller Funeral Home and Crematory will direct the services.
