Helen Waid Powers, 84, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at her home in Highland Village. She was born September 1, 1931 in Roanoke, Alabama to Fred Waid and Emily Durham Waid. Helen married William Dickert Powers on June 18, 1955 in Roanoke, Alabama. She taught science and mathematics at Grissom High in Huntsville, Alabama as well as in private schools abroad including Greece, Turkey and Spain. She continued as a substitute teacher in Highland Village into her late 70s. She will be fondly remembered by many of her former students and fellow faculty members as a tough, sharp-witted and dedicated teacher who loved her students and teaching with a passion. Traveling on six continents Helen and Bill shared a love for travel, fine dining and making friends from around the world. She shared her passion for travel with her grandchildren several times. Helen remained active as an avid bridge player with a group of friends in Highland Village and was a member of several book clubs. She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Terry and Richard Powers; grandchildren, Michelle Vincent and Allen Powers; great-grandchild, Gavin Kelley. A service to celebrate Helen's life was held 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2016, at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound, Texas. A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Edgemont Cemetery in Anniston, Alabama.
