The funeral service for Mr. Huey Ray Brown, 83, will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Golden Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Roland P. Brown officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Mr. Brown passed away on January 11, 2017 at NE Alabama Regional Medical Center. Mr. Brown was born in Piedmont on April 23, 1933. He received his BS from Jacksonville State University, his Master's degree in Education from Middle Tennessee State University and an A.A. in school administration from The University of Alabama. Following college, he worked for a time for the Boy Scouts of America and for GMAC. He went on to coach football and basketball at Oxford High School and Johnston Junior High School. He was also a head basketball coach in Georgia for a year. After returning to Alabama, he became assistant principal at Anniston High School, then to Piedmont as an elementary school principal, Weaver High School, then to Saks Elementary school, where he retired after 18 years. Following retirement, he was a substitute teacher and girls basketball coach at The Donoho School. Mr. Brown was a member of Golden Springs Baptist Church for close to 50 years where he served as a deacon, taught youth boys and was a member of the Fisherman's Sunday School class. He was also one of the founders and a former officer of the Golden Springs Swim Club. Mr. Brown served in the United States Naval Reserve for 20 years. Mr. Brown is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Mary Brown; two sisters, Bertha Tyson and Martha Reaves and his brothers, Marshal Brown and Ernest Brown; a number of nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay Kirkland Brown; his daughters, Dana Marlin Brown Vaughan and her husband, Randall, and Gena Ray Brown Vinyard and her husband, Steve; a sister, Dorothy B. Clarkson and her husband, Robert. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Coheley, Mike Clarkson, Morrow Doss, James Gray, Steve Harbison and David Prosser. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Golden Springs Baptist Church, 3 Robertson Road, Anniston, AL 36207. Online condolences may be made to the family at K.L.
