A memorial service for Jacob "Jake" Whitmore, 22, will be held at 5 p.m. today, February 3, 2017, at Eagle Point Church in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends following the service from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The service will be officiated by Pastor Don Maddox and Dr. Derek Staples, with his father, Joe Whitmore, delivering his eulogy. Jake was taken from us way too soon on January 31, 2017. Jake attended Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville State University and was currently enrolled at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was pursuing a degree in kinesiology with a desire to become a track coach. Jake's love of sports began as a young child. He participated in baseball, football, wrestling and track. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf with his dad. His true love became pole vaulting. While a student at JSU, he used his training and passion for pole vaulting to assist with the pole vault team. Jake is survived by his father, Joe Whitmore (Janet); his mother, Kelly Tindle (Mark); brother, Nathan Johnson (Haley); step-sister, Ashlee Hanvey (Adam); step-brother, Andrew (Kimberly); step-brother, J.D. Tindle; step-sister, Becky Tindle; grandparents, Clinton and Wanda Hobbs; many uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lee and Dorothy Whitmore. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Miller Funeral Home in Oxford. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Jacksonville State University Track Team Foundation account in Jake's honor. Miller Funeral Home 256-831-4611
