Funeral service for James Eric Champion, 36, will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Leatherwood Baptist Church with Anniston Memorial Funeral Home directing and Brother Mike Owens and Bruce Word officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until service time. Eric went to heaven on February 13, 2016. He is rejoicing with his beloved Uncle, Ryan Cook. He is running and playing basketball without pain. He loved the Lord, his friends, family and beloved dogs, Achilles and Mordecai. A part of the Gadsden High Class of 1998, Eric loved playing basketball with Walden, Chris and Chris. He was very adventurous, loved camping, kayaking and swimming. Going to Little River Canyon and tailgating at Auburn Football games was two of his favorite things to do. As a foreman and training as an engineer with Brassfield and Gorrie, he was proud to be part of the construction to extend Jordan-Hare Stadium. He loved to say "I did this" when looking at the stadium. Eric's stories were the best and he could tell a story like no other. Family stories of him and Ryan were always his favorite. No matter the condition, he was always up for a good bonfire. He will always be remembered as a loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. Survivors include his wife, Sunni Champion; chosen son, Easton; his daughters, Jada Rylan and Chloe Louise; his mother, Stephanie Cook; sisters, Emily (Tim) Holder, Alex (Candler) Buttram and Kamera Lewiski; brother, Harrison Mattingly; grandparents, Patricia Jerome and Ted Cook; nephews, William, Tanner, Parker and best buddy Bink (John Candler) and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Pallbearers will be Candler Buttram, Harrison Mattingly, Walden Buttram, Chris Christian, Chris Perry and Michael Coley. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to Hearing Charities of America (HCOA) at hearing charities.org or Chris Kyle FROG Organization at chriskylefrog.org.
