James L. Pike, age 82, of Destin, Florida passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. He was born on April 19, 1935 in Talladega, Alabama, to Thurston Pike and Edna Bryant Pike. James was a graduate of Cleburne County High School, Heflin, Alabama, Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama, and Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, James retired from U S. Army and was a successful Real Estate Investor. Alabama Football was his passion--"Roll Tide" was his mantra. He'll be rooting for Bama on January 1, 2018. He enjoyed traveling especially long cruises to anywhere especially touring Europe. Sports was always a big interest, especially golf and tennis. James was an active member of the Destin United Methodist Church where he served as coordinator of Parking & Transportation services on Sundays. James is preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Camille Pike Hellerstedt; father, Thurston Pike; and mother, Edna Bryant Pike. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Arnold Pike; son, James Stephen Pike (Melissa White) of Marietta, Georgia; granddaughter, Hannah Grace Hellerstedt of Destin, Florida; brother, Thurston Eugene Pike (Sook) of Odenton, Maryland; loving nieces and nephews, and LuLu, his loving Yorkie, who was his buddy. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017, at Destin United Methodist Church, Destin, Florida, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the service. Interment will take place at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Georgia, on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 10:00 am EST. Donations can be made to Alaqua Animal Refuge, Freeport, Florida, or M. D. Anderson Cancer Hospital, Houston, TX, in James' memory. A special thank you to the nurses and the entire staff at Grand Boulevard Health and Rehabilitation for their care and concern for Jim during his two-month care.
