James Leonard Harkins died peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham AL on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at the age of 68. James is survived by his sisters Anita Stewart and Mary Banks; brother-in-law Richard Banks; nieces Bridget Banks Lowrey, Jessica Stewart DeVito, Cindy Harkins, Monica Harkins Freeman; and nephews John Banks, Willis Stewart, and Steve Harkins. He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Louise Harkins, brother Tommy Harkins, and brother-in-law Scott Stewart. James was born on May 3, 1949. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Anniston High School in 1968. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation and proudly served his country for many years. Respecting his wishes, there will be no funeral service. James gave freely of his time and talent to friends, family and Jacksonville State University Athletics. In remembrance of him, a kindness shared would be most appreciated. The family would like to thank the residents of Casey Estates, particularly his friend Eva; and Casey Estates manager, Jill, who was a loyal friend to James and the family. Also, the family would like to thank the staff of CVICU at St. Vincent's Hospital for their compassionate care.
