James Wheeler Cavender, 80, died Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on today April 5, 2016, at Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church #2 with the Dr. Steve Dempsey and the Rev. John D. Collins, officiating. Burial will follow in Pilgrims Rest #2 Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, April 4, 2016 from 5 until 7 p.m. Dryden Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include son, Ricky (Patti) Cavender, of Heflin; daughter, Regina (Wayne) Green, of Jacksonville; sisters, Bobby (John) Holloway, of Heflin and Syble (Roy) Smith, of Ky.; brother, Joel (Doris) Cavender, of Heflin; grandchildren, Mindy, Jared, Kaila, Keaton, Jennifer, and Eric; 11 great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Taylor Turner, Caleb Turner, Doltan Burke, Anthony Bowen, Jamey Smith, and Mark Cavender. James Wheeler Cavender was born in Roanoke, Ala. on January 4 1936, to Syble Palmer Cavender and James Simone Cavender. James was called to preach God's Word in 1968. He pastored many churches over the years the last one being Mt. Grove in Wedowee, Ala. James leaves a legacy of wisdom of God's Word, touching many hearts through his preaching and won many souls to the Lord. Mr. Cavender worked for Lee Brass for 36 years and was a superviser/machinist, only missing 2 days of work. He believed a man was meant to work and work he did. James put God first in his Life and loved his family with his whole heart. James was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Bearden Cavender; twin children, and his parents. Mr. Cavender was a loving, kindhearted man will be missed by all who knew him and lived a full life dedicated to his faith, family and friends.
