Jane Bandy Smith, Ph.D, 82, died of natural causes on June 27, 2017 at West Alabama Hospice in Tuscaloosa. A graveside service will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. David Meginnis officiating and Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North directing. The family will receive guests and lunch will be served at Indian Hills Country Club immediately following the service. Pallbearers are grandsons, Will Smith and Foster Smith, of Birmingham, Roman Smith and Julian Smith, of Hunstville, brother-in-law, Dr. Samuel Rushing Smith and nephew, Hans Smith, of Anniston. She is survived by son, Stuart Edwin Smith, of Huntsville; grandsons, Roman and Julian Smith; daughter-in-law, Laura Holland Smith; granddaughter, Ella Hixon Smith; grandsons, Will Smith and Foster Smith, of Birmingham; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Wrobel Smith; granddaughters, Catherine Bandy Smith and Stuart Elizabeth Smith, of Nashville; brother-in-law, Dr. Samuel Rushing Smith, of Anniston, his wife, Christa Griener Smith; nephews, Hans Smith and Alex Smith; nieces, Rusha Smith and Kimberly Smith McElroy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Edwin Bandy, of Gadsden; her husband, William David Smith II; son, William David Smith III; daughter, Milyn Bandy Smith, and son, Bradley Rushing Smith. Jane was born in Wink, Texas, on October 7, 1934. Her family settled in Gadsden where she spent her childhood years. Later, moving with her husband to Tuscaloosa, to attend the University of Alabama and ultimately raising her family. She graduated from the University with a BS in 1968 and earned her MA in 1969, she earned her ED.S in 1975 from the College of Education, and later earned her ML.S in 1976 from School of Library and Information Services, and her Ph.D from George Peabody College (now Vanderbilt Univ) in 1978. She was passionate about education and teaching. She is a respected, published, professional and educator in her field of Library Media, Instructional Technology and Education and Curriculum. She held various teaching and leadership positions at the University of Alabama, UAB, West Georgia College, University of Georgia, Georgia Department of Education and Alabama Department of Education. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dr. Jane Bandy Smith Memorial Fund, at Christ Episcopal Church of Tuscaloosa.
