A Memorial service for Mr. Joe B. Hitt Jr., 77, of Oxford will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday July 13, 2014, at Oxford First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Chuck Worley officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Hitt died on July 9, 2014, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center. Mr. Hitt was a member of the Oxford First United Methodist Church and a graduate of Jacksonville State University. Mr. Hitt was a retired health inspector with the Calhoun County Health Department. He loved to hunt, fish, spend time with his children and his granddaughter, and spend time on his land. Mr. Hitt is preceded in death by his wife, Jimmy Lou Hitt; and his parents, Joe B. Hitt, Sr. and Sara Ligon Hitt. Mr. Hitt is survived by his daughter, Anna Hitt Wheeler and her husband, Bill, of Anniston; a son, Bobby Hitt, of Anniston; a granddaughter, Michelle Wheeler; his sisters, Mary Ann Hitt, of Anniston, and Sally Hitt Gafford and her husband, Frank Gafford, of St. Louis, Mo.; and nephews, Frank Gafford, Alex Gafford, and Michael Gafford. Honorary pallbearers will be John Burris, Eugene "Pug" Butler, Bobby Jones, Eugene Landers, Lewis Horn, and the Martha T. Brooks Sunday School Class. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Oxford First United Methodist Church, 212 Snow Street Oxford, AL 36203.
