Joe Cavender, 69, died peacefully on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Service will be held today March 15, 2016 at Heflin Baptist Church. He will lie in state one hour prior to service. Mr. Cavender was a 1965 graduate of Cleburne County High School and received his undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University. He attended the University of Alabama, Auburn University and LSU to complete his Masters and Ed.S degrees. He was known for his smile, his desire to help people in any way he could and for his love of Jesus. As a youngster, he worked a paper route, and as a teenager worked at IGA. Following high school graduation, he was employed at the Anniston Army Depot and later American Greetings. After graduating from college, he was a math teacher for Cleburne County High School but was led in the direction of Adult Education. Mr. Cavender served in Adult Education for over 35 years where he served as the Director of Adult Education, President of ALAPCAE and kept close ties with the Department of Post Secondary Education in Montgomery, Alabama. His passion was to continually find ways to encourage adults of all ages to complete their high school education and constantly looked for ways to benefit adult learners. In 2010, Mr. Cavender was inducted into the Alabama Adult Education Directors Association Hall of Fame for his efforts in improving adult education across the state of Alabama. Mr. Cavender retired from Gadsden State Community College in October of 2011. He was a member of Golden Springs Baptist Church and held close ties to Heflin Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon, was Sunday School Director and helped with youth group activities. Mr. Cavender was a proud native of Heflin and enjoyed supporting the school system and sports programs of Cleburne County High School. Following the death of his wife in 2011, Mr. Cavender was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and spent the last year of his life at Autumn Cove Retirement Community in Anniston, Alabama. He is survived by his daughters, Krista Walker and Michele Cavender; son, Michael Cavender; daughter-in-law, Jen Chapman Cavender; mother-in-law, Ruth Piper, of Fruithurst; brother, Larry Cavender, of Heflin; brother, Kenny Cavender (and Marsha), of Heflin; brother, Bill Cavender (and Julie) of Heflin; brother, Bobby Cavender (and Donna), of Heflin. He was the proud grandfather, of Brayden Walker, Ansley Walker, Austin Walker, Brenna Harris, Callie Cavender and Celeste Cavender. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Clara Piper Cavender; his father, Carroll Cavender, of Heflin; and his mother, Malene Coggin Cavender, of Heflin. Pallbearers are Larry Cavender, Kenny Cavender, Bill Cavender, Bobby Cavender, Michael Cavender and Brandon Freeman. Honorary pallbearers are Austin Walker, Brayden Walker, Scott Walker, Mike Harris, Lloyd Baswell and Chris Oliver, Ken DuHon, George Iliff, Bobby Bailey and Randall White.
