John Albert Ratliff III (Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, Retired), of Jacksonville, died on October 14, 2014. The son of John A. Ratliff Jr and Pauline Allen Ratliff, he was born in Wadesboro, N.C. on June 23, 1933. He was a graduate of Wadesboro High School (1951), Wake Forest University (BBA 1955), and Jacksonville State University (MBA 1977). During a career in the US Army, he was stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala.; Fort Hood, TX; Paris, France; Saigon, Vietnam, and was an assistant professor in the Department of Military Science at N.C. State University in Raleigh, N.C. While at N.C. State University, he was voted by the students as being among the top 10 percent of instructors at the university. His military awards included the Bronze Star medal, the Meritorious service medal, the Joint Service Commendation medal, the Army Commendation medal, and other decorations. After retiring from active duty, he worked for H&R Block in Jacksonville, Ala.; as Business manager for a Jacksonville, Ala. medical practice; and as a Military Research Analyst at the Directorate of Combat Developments, US Army Chemical School at Fort McClellan, Ala. He was a former member of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Wake Forest University; the Salisbury, N.C. Lions Club where he was recognized as the Lion of the Year in 1998 and named a Jack Stickley fellow in 2006 for dedicated humanitarian services; the Jacksonville, Ala. Exchange Club; the Central Carolina and Northeast Alabama chapters of The Military Officers Association of America; The First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Ala. and the Dean/Brotherhood Sunday School class of that church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Shirley Anne Lawson, of Salisbury, N.C. (who currently resides in Jacksonville, Ala.); son John Lawson Ratliff, of Chimney Rock, N.C.; daughters, Shirley Dianne Schneider, of Owasso, Okla. and Deborah Anne Angel, of Jacksonville, Ala.; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral will be at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 with Dr. Derek Staples officiating. A visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. A private entombment service will be at Forestlawn Mausoleum in Anniston, Ala.
