A memorial service for John Daniel Hamilton Sr., 82, will be held at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12-2 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Hamilton died Sunday, May 04, 2014, at Jacksonville Health and Rehab after an extended illness. Mr. Hamilton is survived by a daughter, Danita Hamilton; two sons, A.J. (Julia) Hamilton and Christopher Hamilton; four grandchildren, Emily (Todd) Anderson, Joshua (Holly) Trawick, Lindsay Hamilton and Alie Hamilton; five great grandchildren, Alexis Trawick, Jackson Trawick, Jonathan Trawick, Nicholas Anderson and Samuel Anderson; one brother, Jim Hamilton and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Hamilton retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer having served as a Seabee during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During his 22 years of military service he was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal for Marine Combat, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, RVN Cross of Gallantry, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct 5 stars and Meritorious Service Ribbon. After retirement from the Navy, he worked at the Anniston Army Depot. He served his country and government for a total of 41 years. Mr. Hamilton was an avid and proficient golfer during his time in the service and upon retirement. He won numerous tournaments and scored several hole in ones during his lifetime of play. Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby Hamilton; his parents, Elkin and Lula Hamilton; a sister, Elsie Ponder; a brother, Brian Hamilton; and a son, John Hamilton, Jr. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dorothy Bonds, longtime friend and caregiver and also the staff of Jacksonville Health and Rehab and Life Choice Hospice.
