The funeral service for John E. Reaves Sr. M.D., 78, will be at noon on Friday, November 20, 2015, at Golden Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Roland P. Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour at the church. Dr. Reaves passed away on November 16, 2015. Dr. Reaves graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1956. Following high school, he served his country with honor in the United States Navy Reserve. He went on to graduate from Birmingham Southern in 1960, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School in 1964. He served as chief of surgery in ophthalmology in 1968. He practiced in Anniston from 1968 - 1994. He has a U.S. Patent for an optical device used in eye examinations. He served on the Alabama Board of Ophthalmology, the Anniston City Council, the Anniston Housing Authority Board, a past trustee of the Calhoun County Baptist Association and a member of the Board of Directors for The Donoho School since 1976. He was also a member of Golden Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon. Dr. Reaves will be forever remembered as a Godly, loving and devoted man. His greatest joy in life was his family. His passion was to serve and give his life, his treasures and his faith to all those around him. He was always known for saying, "What can I do for you?" Dr. Reaves is preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Smith Reaves and John Edward Reaves. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Patricia Nichols Reaves, of Anniston; his daughters, Patti White and her husband, David, of Kennesaw, Ga. and Millie Nelson and her husband, Matt, of Anniston; his sons, Dr. John E. Reaves Jr. and his wife, Kendall, of Carmel, Indiana and Eddie Reaves and his wife, Jennifer, of Eastaboga; grandchildren, Jonathan and Hannah Reaves, David, Jordan and Rebecca White, Kelly, Reaves and Will Nelson and James, Susanna and Joshua Reaves. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Golden Springs Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 3 Robertson Road, Anniston, AL 36207 or to The Donoho School Endowment Fund, 2501 Henry Road, Anniston, AL 36207.
