Funeral service for Mr. John G. Wheeles, 69, will be held Friday March 18, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Lystra Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Willis, the Rev. Randy Anderson, and the Rev. Josh Barkley officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Mr. Wheeles passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County. He was a graduate of Clay County High School Class of 1964. Prior to his retirement he was employed at CenturyTel as a telephone engineer for 35 years. He served on the Clay County Board of Education for 8 years, served as a Clay County Commissioner District 4 for three terms, and served as a substitute teacher at Clay County High School. He was a member of the U. S. Army National Guard 127th Medical Group for more than 25 years. He was a member of Lystra Baptist Church where he had served as deacon for more than 40 years. Mr. Wheeles is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beth Childers Wheeles, of Ashland; two sons, Todd Wheeles (Liz), of Birmingham, and Chris Wheeles (Kristie), of Gulf Shores; eight grandchildren, Tori Wheeles, Bebe Wheeles, Ethan Wheeles, Navie Wheeles, Josie Wheeles, Nevaeh Williams, Kai Wheeles, Harper Wheeles; one great-granddaughter, Audrey Grissom; four sisters, Nadine Kennedy, and Ida Randall, both of Ashland, Mamie Kennedy of Lineville, and Glenda Amason, of Powder Springs, Ga.; and one brother, W. C. Wheeles, of Lineville. He was preceded in death by his infant son; his parents, James William Wheeles and Mary Walls Wheeles; sister, Angie Denney; and brother, Mike Wheeles. Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Wheeles will be Ethan Wheeles, Alan Wheeles, Jamie Walker, Stephen Bowen, Bob Allen, and Josh Nelson. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be John Burradell, Terrell Carr, Larry Fetner, Kenneth Forbes, Lester Robinson, and Ray Milstead. Clay County Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
