Funeral service for John Vernon Vanderford, 84, will be today, June 1, 2016 at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont with the Rev. Tom Moye officiating and Thompson Funeral Home in charge. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30- 3:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Piedmont Memory Gardens. Mr. Vanderford passed away Monday, May 30, 2016 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Vanderford; one daughter, Debra Vanderford Ledbetter, of Piedmont; two grandsons, Kevin Hamrick (Brittney), of White Plains, and Jeff Hamrick (ReAnna), of Lincoln; three great-grandchildren, Coleman Hamrick, Arabella Hamrick and Lorelle Hamrick; sister-in-law, Ophelia Formby, of Piedmont; niece, Diane Formby LeCroy (Phil), of Piedmont; several great-nieces and great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Pallbearers will be Wesley Holbrooks, Phil LeCroy, Clay Sparks, Mark Formby, Barry Naugher and Dallas Whorton. Honorary pallbearers will be Coleman Hamrick, Arabella Hamrick, Lorelle Hamrick, John Strickland, Claude Fisher, Terri Green Rainey, Jimmy LeCroy and the Frank Wofford Sunday School Class. Mr. Vanderford was a native and lifelong resident of Piedmont. He was a graduate of Spring Garden High School and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a former employee of the State of Alabama Highway Department, Kirk Construction Company, served as Superintendent of the City of Piedmont Street and Sanitation Department and also worked at Strickland's Hardware. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont, Lozahatchee Masonic Lodge #97 F&AM and was an avid University of Alabama and Atlanta Braves fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oris and Eula Vanderford; two sisters, Vivian Carter and Nevelyn Goss, and a nephew, Gerald Formby. The family request no flowers and that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont, 300 N. Main Street, Piedmont, AL 36272 or the Piedmont Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 333, Piedmont, AL 36272. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Amedysis Home Health of Anniston and Amedysis Hospice of Gadsden.
