Funeral service for Joseph Dwight Stevenson Sr., 82, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Leatherwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Anniston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening from 5-7 at the church. Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Stevenson, Charlene Abernathy (Jeff) and Joey Stevenson (Lisa); grandchildren, Jeffery James, David J. Abernathy II (Amanda), Jessica Turner (Joey), Alyssa Stevenson and Delaney Stevenson; great-grandchildren, Holly James, David "Trey" Abernathy III, Andrew Abernathy, Bentlee Turner and Walker Turner. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Gwen Stevenson, and son-in-law, Joseph Gerych. Pallbearers will be Jeffery James, David Abernathy, Joey Turner, Tony Maxwell, Kenneth Burgess and Ronald Borders. Mr. Stevenson was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church. He enjoyed camping and gardening. He retired from civilian service at Ft. McClellan in 1993 after 39 years of service. He was also a past Captain of the Anniston Rescue Squad and was co-founder of Ambulance Service. He served as Assistant Police Chief of Weaver.
