Born September 16, 1923, Jules DuPré passed away surrounded by his family on October 4, 2017, at age 94. He is survived by his wife, Lisette; his children, Genevieve, Patrick, Frankie, and Rickie; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. A native of Belgium, and a semi-pro hockey player in his youth, Jules earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Liege in 1947, and a master's degree in Metallography and Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1949. In 1956 he brought his family to the U.S. upon landing a job in Birmingham hopping the pond on the S.S. Nieue Amsterdam, which stayed outside of the NYC Harbor until after daybreak at the captain's orders so that the immigrants on board could see the Statue of Liberty in the light of day. After arriving in New York, Jules, Lisette, and his two eldest children took the Southern Crescent train from NYC to Birmingham, where he and Lisette added two more to the family. In 1972, he took a position with Dresser Manufacturing in Anniston. He retired in 1984 as Manager of Operations, but filled his time by traveling the world through a program with Georgia Tech aimed at helping other countries improve their industrial processes. Jules is remembered for his love of hockey, tennis, football, traveling, and most importantly being with his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. DuPré's honor to the Calhoun County Humane Society, 1201 Parkwood Drive, Anniston, AL 36201.
