Beloved by all who knew her, Julia Rhyne Nolen died Monday, March 24, 2014, at her home in Ashland. She was 92 years old. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 until 8 at the Clay County Funeral Home in Ashland. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church, Ashland. Burial will follow in the Ashland City Cemetery. Survivors include three children, Virginia Kathleen Owens and her husband, Ricky, of Fort Payne, DeForest Rhyne Nolen, of Atlanta, Ga. and Julia Nolen Griffin and her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Robert C. Griffin, USMC (Retired), of Crittenden, Ky.; one sister, Stella Rhyne Hobdy, of Hayneville; grandchildren, Becky Henderson and her husband, Frank, of Auburn, Jennifer Lumb and her husband, Jeffrey, of Charleston, S.C., Caroline Miller and her husband, Major Stephen Miller, USA, of Columbus, Ga., Katherine Greiling and her husband, Eric, of Woodbridge, Va. and Robert Nolen Griffin and his wife, Kristina, of Haymarket, Va.; great-grandchildren, Meghan and Jacob Henderson, of Auburn, Conner and Austin Lumb, of Charleston, S.C., Samuel and Charlotte Miller, of Columbus, Ga., Katie Greiling of Woodbridge, Va. and Sabrina Griffin of Haymarket, Virginia. Mrs. Nolen was predeceased by her husband, DeForest Moody Nolen and her son, Jack Richard Nolen (1956-1971); her parents, Brady C. and Laura F. Rhyne, of Benton, Ala.; one brother, Carroll H. Rhyne and one sister Beula R. Carswell, both of Benton, Alabama. Mrs. Nolen was a native of Benton, Ala., located in Lowndes County. She graduated from Hayneville High School in 1939 and attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, before transferring to Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University. On November 10, 1943 she married Lieutenant (j.g.) DeForest Moody Nolen, USNR, in the Bethel Methodist Church of Charleston, South Carolina. They were married for 62 years. Mrs. Nolen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ashland. She loved God, the church, her family, her friends and the people of Ashland. Mrs. Nolen was a devoted wife and beloved mother and adored by all who knew her. The family wishes to thank the community of Ashland and Clay County for the outpouring of prayers, love and concern during this time. Your loving support and friendship have been overwhelming. The family also wishes to express our gratitude to the caregivers, Willie F. (Bunky) Heard, Sheila Suggs, Sandy Smith, Vicki Yates, Mary Ann Sims, Ann East, Dawn Street, Carolyn Gibbons, Theresa Suggs and Abby Smith.
